STEM

SIM International Academy offers a 6-year international curriculum that engenders inquiry, communication and an enterprise mindset. Designed to focus on applied learning in areas such as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and the Social Sciences, their students will be exposed to authentic scenarios to deepen their understanding and appreciation of these various disciplines in an applied context.

STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. Rather than teaching the four disciplines as separate and discrete subjects, STEM integrates them into a cohesive learning paradigm based on real-world applications. The STEM approach focuses on teaching these 4 key educational subjects in an integrated manner so that elements of each subject are applied to the others. STEM programs span from preschool through college masters degree programs and is a growing movement in education, not just in the United States but around the world.

STEM programs are intended to increase students’ interest in pursuing higher education and careers in those fields. STEM typically uses a newer model of blended learning that combines traditional classroom teaching with online learning and hands-on learning activities. This model of blended learning aims to give students the opportunity to experience different ways of learning and problem-solving.

STEM Science

STEM science programs include the usual biology, ecology, chemistry, and physics. However, the difference is in that STEM science classes incorporate technology, engineering, and math into scientific studies.

STEM Technology

STEM technology programs go way beyond the usual IT classes which included computer lab sessions and learning how to use simple softwares. Technology classes in the STEM program may include topics like digital modeling and prototyping, 3D printing, mobile technology, computer programming, data analytics, Internet of Things (IoT), machine learning, and game development.

STEM Engineering

STEM Engineering classes are sophisticated and might include high-level topics like civil engineering, electronics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and robotics. These topics are broken down into bite-sized chunks of information for children to absorb from a young age so as to cultivate an interest for learning.

STEM Mathematics

STEM Mathematics programs will include the usual mathematics topics such as algebra, geometry, and calculus. However, STEM math has two main differences from the usual math class. First, kids learn more advanced mathematics at younger ages with introductory algebra and geometry starting as early as third grade. Second, it incorporates concepts and exercises that apply science, technology, and engineering to mathematics.

While SIM IA currently already offers the STEM program, it is still not a STEM accredited school. In its first award ceremony held last week, SIM IA announced that it is working with STEM.org to get the school accredited as a STEM school in 2019. This will allow SIM IA to be able to connect with worldwide partners and collaborate with students around the world. The school expressed that this will create new opportunities for students to create great networks and to develop their interests and talents better.
